I Never Want to Work Out… But I Always Love It When I Do

Let me be honest: I never want to work out.

Seriously. Every single time, it’s the same story. My bed is cozy. My to-do list is long. The weather isn’t perfect. I tell myself I’m too tired, too sore, too behind. But here’s the thing—once I start moving, something clicks. By the time I’m in it, I feel strong, present, and proud. And when I’m done? I feel amazing.

So how do I get from “I can’t” to “I did”?

I’ve learned a few tricks that help me outsmart my own resistance. One of my favorites: “I don’t wait to feel to do.” Feelings are fleeting. Motivation is unreliable. If I only worked out when I felt like it, I’d never go. So instead of waiting to feel motivated, I move into action. I commit. I just do.

Another game-changer? The 5-Second Rule (thank you Mel Robbins!!!):
5, 4, 3, 2, 1… GO.
This simple countdown interrupts the fear center in your brain (thanks, amygdala) and gives you just enough time to launch yourself into action. I use it to lace up my sneakers, start a run, or press play on a strength video. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it works.

But beyond the mindset shifts, I’ve also found that being active in a way that works for me is key.

I’ve spent time learning what makes my body feel its best—and here’s my rhythm:

  • 2-3 days of harder running – it clears my mind, gets my heart pumping, and brings a challenge I crave.
  • 1 day of strength training – I love feeling grounded and powerful.
  • 1 day of lighter movement – like walking, swimming, or biking – this helps me stay in flow without burning out.

This blend helps me operate at my best—physically, emotionally, and mentally. I’m not following anyone else’s schedule or definition of fitness. I’m listening inward and building habits that energize, rather than exhaust.

And that, to me, is a win.

So tell me—how are you winning today? Whether it’s a five-minute stretch, a morning walk, or simply getting up and doing the thing you didn’t want to do—your version of movement matters. You don’t have to want to start. You just have to begin.
